GPRS means General Packet Radio Signal. It is a special package designed to enable you surf the internet from your mobile phones. There is also another package that enables you browse the web from your handset and that is the CSD but this is a dial-up services and as such, it charges you based on duration spent browsing unlike in the case of GPRS where you are charged based on the size of the website/wapsites visited and not on the duration spent browsing. These services allows the sending and receiving of multimedia messages such as pictures, videos, MP3, etc. that cannot be sent by text messages, but by MMS.
However, before you can enjoy this service, you will need mobile phone that has WAP features because it’s not all mobile phones can be used to browse the web. If you are sure your handset is compatible, the next step is to call the customer care of your network and tell them to activate your line for wap. It may take some days but they will definitely send the settings to your phone which you have to save in your handset and you can then browse the web and check your e-mails on your phone.
On the other hand, to activate GPRS on MTN by air, send a text message with the word, ‘settings’ to 4777 or 3888. Zain send ‘wap, name of your phone, model’ to 232. eg ‘wap nokia 3110’ to 232. GLO subscribers should type ‘activate wap, phone name and model number’ to 927. For GLO MMS, use the same GLO process but send this time to 667. All text messages are free. After some time, you will receive the GPRS and WAP configuration settings which can be installed into your phone. Save the settings on your phone. After receiving the settings and saving it, turn your phone off and on again. You will see the GPRS symbol (G) on your phone’s desktop. If you didn’t see this symbol, it stands to reason that there’s no GPRS coverage in your area. After receiving these settings, you should be able to browse on your phone.
